Edmund's Hummingbird & Poppy Panel — the final 95
A traditional Tiffany-style circular leaded-glass round panel, approximately 20cm in diameter, from the Cotswolds workshop of Edmund Whitehead (72). Built using Louis Comfort Tiffany's 1885 copper-foil method — around 110 separate pieces of hand-cut English cathedral glass, every seam wrapped in 1mm copper foil and soldered by hand. A hummingbird in flight at the centre with an iridescent green head, three large red poppies surrounding it, pink poppy buds and green leaves filling the spaces. Slim wrought-iron hoop around the perimeter and a small hanging chain at the top.
What sets it apart
- Tiffany copper-foil construction — 1mm seams instead of 4mm lead came, the reason this much detail can be rendered at this scale
- ~110 hand-cut cathedral-glass pieces per panel — every petal, wing-feather and leaf is a separate piece of cut glass, nothing painted on
- Iridescent-glass hummingbird head — flashes like a real hummingbird's gorget when the sun catches it
- Hand-rolled English cathedral background — cream-coloured with a faint honeycomb texture
- Wrought-iron hoop welded by a smith in Cirencester
- 14-18 hours of bench work per panel, three days of which is the copper-foiling alone
- The final 95 — once gone, Edmund's workshop closes for good
